Traditionally on Tisha B’av we read the Book of Lamentations (Eicha). A book that captures images of suffering and destruction. A book of laments, sorrow, grief, and horror.
And it is 2023. Israel is creating even greater hardship for Palestinians and its imperfect democracy hangs in the balance. The earth is being destroyed. The US continues to build up its military and police forces at the cost of the lives of ordinary people.
So this year we are doing something slightly different. Rather than lament the past, we will lament the present. We will cry, mourn, and grieve for today. Rabbi Cat has written a modern-day version of lamentations focusing on the devastation and horror in the world today.
We will chant from Rabbi Cat Zavis’ modern version in English (which incorporates some of the language from the original Book of Lamentations) and have space for sharing and grieving.
Rabbi Cat Zavis
, Rabbi Michael Lerner, and Dr. Ami Goodman
