Torah Study | Miketz 5784

December 16, 2023 @ 9:30 am - 12:30 pm PST

Free

Join our Celebration of the Universe and Torah Study on Saturday, December 16th with Rabbi Cat Zavis. We will begin our Shabbat service with meaningful prayers, balancing the awe of being alive with the call in our tradition for radical transformation of our world.

Our Torah study this week presents the continuing saga of Joseph, Jacob’s most beloved son. Rabbi Cat will provide some reflections from last week’s parsha, Vayeshev, when Jacob gives Joseph a beautiful and colorful tunic. Joseph’s brothers are so jealous of Jacob’s love for Joseph they cannot speak a kind word to Joseph. They conspire to kill him and Reuben convinces his brothers to not kill Joseph. So they throw Joseph into a pit – Reuben, we are told, intends to rescue him later, but does not stick around to see what transpires. What does it mean to turn your back when your “brother” is in distress, leaving him in the hands of those who hate him?

Vayeshev continues with some more interesting and intriguing plots, including the pregnancy of Tamar, Joseph being sold to the Egyptians, and eventually Joseph ending up in prison. In this week’s parsha Miketz, Joseph rises up from the dust of the prison to become second-in-command to the Pharaoh. We will explore how Joseph uses his position of power to disempower and disenfranchise the Egyptian people. What are the implications of Joseph’s actions decades later? What can we learn from Joseph’s struggles that might help inform and guide our actions today?
