Membership
The Founding Perspective of the Synagogue lays out the foundations for Beyt Tikkun, and anyone seeking to join should read that first and be sure that they feel comfortable with it. Being comfortable does not mean that you have to agree with every point, because many members disagree with one or even several points (though not necessarily the same points as each other). But what they don't disagree about is that this statement defines what Beyt Tikkun is and will be, and they recognize that the religious and political life of the community takes place within that framework. So please read our founding statement. We hope you'll find it exciting and inspiring! And then join us—so that we can co-create the community!
About Membership
Prayer services are not restricted to members. However, we invite you to consider joining our synagogue if you understand and agree with the conception of Beyt Tikkun summarized on this Site and articulated more thoroughly in our Founding Perspective. We welcome anyone who is interesting in the process of actualizing this particular vision. We have a very low membership fee and we are committed to building a community of people who share our fundamental conception.
The basic cost of membership is 1% of your annual (gross) family income, but not less than $300 (for singles) or $400 (for couples). Membership includes High Holidays tickets.
We are also offering a $60 membership to young adults between the ages of 22 and 29.
If you cannot afford the membership dues, please let us know and we will work something out. No one will be kept from joining solely for lack of ability to pay. We have some opportunities available for people to exchange their special skills and talents for a modified membership fee. So please don't let money be a factor in joining Beyt Tikkun.
Beyt Tikkun offers a $60 synagogue memberships to Bay Area residents ages 21 through 29. This membership includes free tickets to all High Holy Day services. We are hoping that once you experience the warmth and spiritual excitement in Beyt Tikkun, you will want to make us your synagogue home.
Of course, if you already get what is so terrific about Beyt Tikkun, we'd prefer if you paid full membership on the sliding fee scale according to income--we are not one of those big wealthy synagogues that can afford to lose revenues. Our entire operating budget comes from what we get at the High Holy Days.
Here are the requirements for the young adult membership:
Be permanent residents of the Bay Area
Be ages 21 through 30.
For a family membership, both partners must meet age requirements. Otherwise, older member of couple should pay as an individual.
Must not be a member of another synagogue for the same time period.
Must attend Rabbi Lerner's Reintroduction to Judaism course, which will be meeting from early Friday evening through early Sunday evening from November 6, 2009 through November 8, 2009.
